“…his lips curved in a wicked smile that made peril feel like passion and risk seem like reward.” Grace Callaway has a wonderful way with words, and I love when she drops little gems like that one in her stories. This one is about Gigi (Georgiana), the youngest of the Blackwells and the only girl. She has fallen in love with the small town of Chuddums Bottom, where one of her brothers (Ethan, the H in the previous novel, “One Kiss to Desire”) originally decided to live so that he could be a recluse but instead, he found true love and stayed. Many believe the town has been cursed by a specter named “Bloody Thom,” though some of the discoveries in Ethan’s story served to dispel the generational beliefs. Gigi, a romantic and eternal optimist, believes that the story of Thomas and Rose is a love story, and she wants to help the town her brother has settled in grow and be prosperous once again, so she decides to focus her time and efforts on rejuvenating the once famous spa. Working along side Miss Letty, a woman who had been down on her luck as many residents of the town had been, she creates a water brand that claims to have the ability to make people fall in love. It has even been successful when she sold it in London, so maybe she is onto something after all! And the attention of the grand reopening of the spa will certainly mean that the town will benefit further. Conrad Godwin is known as a ruthless businessman who has made his fortune the hard way. He was shunned by his family as a child, bullied by relatives that should have cared for him, lost both of his parents in his youth, send to a boarding school of hard knocks, and found notoriety as a prizefighter, a role that allowed him to earn enough to begin his businesses. He has a single-minded mission: destroy those who wronged him…and anyone else who gets in the way of that goal. His sights are currently set on Chuddums, the home of a man that turned him and his mother away from their rightful place in their greatest time of need. The problem is, this new spa and its silly water are gaining a lot of attention, bringing more people to the town, resulting in a resurgence of the town, which benefits the man he is seeking to crush beneath his top-of-the-line boots. His solution is to buy the spa and shut it down, ensuring that his enemy cannot profit. There is one little, spirited, beautiful problem: Gigi Blackwell. She refuses to allow him to ruin what she has worked so hard to restore. Gigi and Conrad butt heads many times as a result of their opposing goals, though they are equally fascinated by each other, so their disdain often ends in passion. As they end up spending more time together, they begin to fall in love, though Conrad’s secrets threaten their newfound romance. Will they find a way to compromise so that Conrad can get his revenge and Gigi can continue her efforts to restore Chuddum Bottoms? Or will one too many secrets end their story before it can truly begin? I really liked the plot points in this story as well as the steamy goodness! My only criticism is I felt like Conrad was a little too over the top with his need for revenge and was unwilling to listen to Gigi when he had told her repeatedly how much he valued her intelligence and resourcefulness. I was glad the angst of that situation did not last very long. Overall, another wonderful story from Grace Callaway that I would highly recommend!
