Elettronico’s second Projekt album departs decisively from the Italo-disco pulse of 2023’s Electric Mind, steering instead toward an airy, minimal, contemplative sound — while remaining subtly danceable beneath the surface. Inspired by the oceanic imagery and emotional arc of Homer’s Odyssey, the album unfolds as a metaphorical journey through the Mediterranean: waves of drifting synths, suspended rhythms, and warm melodic fragments evoke travel, longing, and the pull of home. Rather than telling a literal story, ODYSSEY captures a mood — reflective and quietly hypnotic. The album incorporates a taste for steady danceable rhythms taking the form of discreet, subtle, flexible beats under the waves of breezy, layered synths floating around the ears in suspended, timeless loops of spiral melodies and sudden, relieving bursts of joy. As the name implies, Odyssey pays homage to Homer’s masterpiece, but it’s not a literal retelling of the story; rather it is an evocative suggestion to set the path of a “nostos,” a journey back home through the unknown places that unfold in front of one’s eyes as the music flows. Water is the main protagonist of this narrative: be it the liquid, quasi-amniotic cocoon of “Mermaid,” the vaporous clouds of “Sirens,” or the crystal, cracking ice of “Melody PM” and “Arthur The White Bear,” the sea is omnipresent as the surface of a hidden, ever-changing world where soul and body dissolve into countless drops. Musically, the album learns the lesson of the likes of Moby for its shameless display of emotions and variety of compositions within the range of electronic music. From the aggressive and energetic opener “Spaceman 3″ to the mesmerizing depths of “Home of the Brave,” there’s room for the joyfulness of the nordic electronic of Röyksopp (“Melody PM,” “Arthur the White Bear”), and the taste of nostalgic Balearic Trance, dating back to a 90s summer feeling (“A Esperança,” “Doctor Caligari.”) The album cover reflects the Homeric suggestion of the title: we see the faithful dog Argo looking at the sea with his unbreakable hope of seeing his master again. He refuses to die before reuniting with Ulysses. The image gives substance to the unnamed feeling that flows through the songs. We are not randomly displaced by the waves, but we’re following a pattern that, despite deviations, leads us to where we truly belong. “All in my mind,” with its single verse, is the key to the meaning of the journey we’ve been through: we never moved but rather passed through that slice of life where we are estranged from ourselves and people we love. Finding ourselves in the same place we’ve always been seems uncomfortably unknown and hostile, yet there’s always someone waiting to help pull us out of the water and get back on track. The sense of the journey is further enhanced by the final, nearly 47-minute gapless version of the album. The 13 individual tracks crossfade revealing how they were meant to blend in a continuous flow of sounds.
